In a surprising turn of events, Rhode Island's Democratic Senator Sheldon Whitehouse finds himself in the midst of an ethics scandal.
Whitehouse, who has often been compared to lawmakers such as Sens. Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) for his grandiloquent rhetoric and claims of defending democracy, now faces accusations of undermining the very liberty and constitutional system he purports to uphold.
Whitehouse's situation is reminiscent of Schiff's unfulfilled promises of producing evidence of Donald Trump's involvement in Russian collusion, and Schumer's threats of violence against Supreme Court Justices over disagreements with their rulings. However, the Senator's current predicament involves allegations of a potential conflict of interest that has resulted in substantial federal grants for a nonprofit associated with his wife.
According to RedState, legal experts are highlighting what they perceive as hypocrisy. "Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, who has made his political career accusing others of dark money corruption, appears to be throwing stones in his glass house," stated Mike Davis, the former chief counsel for nominations to former Senate Judiciary Chair Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa. Brett Tolman, former U.S. attorney and executive director of Right On Crime, echoed this sentiment, labeling the situation as "the height of hypocrisy."
The controversy surrounds Whitehouse's support for legislation that directed millions of dollars to his wifes environmental nonprofit, Ocean Conservancy. The organization has reportedly received over $14.2 million in federal grants, funded by bills Whitehouse voted for, while his wife has been paid nearly $2.7 million.
The Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust (FACT), an ethics watchdog, has requested an investigation into Whitehouse's actions. In a letter to Senate Select Committee on Ethics Chair James Lankford, R-Okla., and Vice Chair Chris Coons, D-Del., FACT asked for a probe into whether Whitehouse violated Senate ethics rules on conflicts of interest.
"This is not just a careless ethical lapse in judgment," Tolman added. "This is corruption, Washington, D.C., style. This is literally what many public officials have been prosecuted for by DOJ (Department of Justice). Im aware of multiple cases DOJ is pursuing right now with less egregious facts."
The unfolding scandal surrounding Whitehouse appears to embody the problems that plague The Swamp. It remains to be seen whether these allegations will ignite a larger fire, but for now, the smoke is certainly visible.
