In a recent appearance on CNN's "OutFront," Representative Don Bacon (R-NE) expressed his disapproval of President Donald Trump's stance on the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
Bacon criticized Trump for aligning himself with Russian President Vladimir Putin, a move he deemed inappropriate given the circumstances of the conflict.
According to Breitbart, Bacon remarked, "Well, the president needs a do-over day start again. He took a bad turn. I think what he said is wrong. And its a shame. Many Republicans know what the president said today was wrong." Bacon emphasized that Putin initiated the invasion and described him as a dictator who has eliminated his adversaries.
In contrast, he highlighted that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was legitimately elected and is currently operating under martial law, which allows for the postponement of elections under their constitution. Bacon urged the President to support freedom, democracy, and the victim rather than the aggressor, stating, "I wanted to be very strong in my words today because this Republican does not agree with what the President said."
During the interview, host Brianna Keilar inquired whether Zelensky could have managed the situation differently. Bacon responded, "I think he handled it tactfully. You have to push back. He is the victim. Putin is the invaderPutins bombing of cities. Russians are obliterating the towns that they have taken over, and theyve assassinated or murdered prisoners of war. Theyve raped and pillaged. Russia is on the bad side here."
Bacon stressed the need for a president with "moral clarity" regarding the war, expressing disappointment that Trump did not rise above the actions of President Joe Biden.
Bacon further criticized Biden's approach, stating, "I thought Joe Biden was slow in getting weapons there. He was using rules of engagement that restricted Ukraine. It was really feeding the gridlock."
He had hoped for a more decisive and honorable resolution to the conflict from Trump, lamenting that the current course of action aligns with the dictator rather than democracy. Bacon's remarks underscore a call for strong leadership and moral integrity in addressing international conflicts, advocating for a stance that champions democratic values and supports those under siege.
