The Department of Education has announced a significant reduction in funding, cutting $600 million from grants that previously supported diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) teacher training programs.
These programs, which have been described as "divisive," included training on critical race theory (CRT), "social justice activism," and "anti-racism," which the department has deemed "inappropriate and unnecessary." Additionally, some of these grants were allocated for recruitment strategies that considered race as a factor for hiring teachers and staff.
According to the Daily Caller, the Department of Education's decision reflects a broader effort to refocus educational priorities. Some of the training programs required participants to acknowledge and address "systemic inequities" such as racism, ableism, and other forms of discrimination. Workshops under these grants also emphasized "Dismantling Racial Bias" and "Centering Equity in the Classroom." The department's stance is that these initiatives detract from essential educational goals.
Savannah Newhouse, a spokesperson for the Department of Education, highlighted the urgency of addressing fundamental educational needs. "As The Nations Report Card (NAEP) recently indicated, Americas students are falling dangerously behind in math and reading," Newhouse stated. "Teacher prep programs should be prioritizing training that prepares youth with the fundamentals they need to succeed for the future, not wasting valuable training resources on divisive ideologies. The U.S. Department of Education will continue working to ensure taxpayer dollars are used wisely to strengthen Americas education system."
Under President Donald Trump's administration, there has been a concerted effort to dismantle DEI initiatives across federal agencies. This has included the removal of DEI-related documents from the department's website, the dissolution of related teams, and the suspension of DEI training sessions. Furthermore, the department has issued a directive for schools to cease any race-based preferences in admissions or other programs, warning that non-compliance could result in the withdrawal of federal funding.
The academic performance of American students has been a growing concern, with recent data indicating a significant decline in math and reading proficiency since the pandemic. Despite efforts under the Biden administration, these learning losses have not been recovered, with reading scores for fourth and eighth graders continuing to fall and math scores stagnating.
Former President Joe Biden's education strategy involved substantial investment in initiatives promoting "LGBTQ inclusion" and "anti-racism and anti-oppression" in schools. However, the current administration's focus appears to be shifting towards reinforcing core academic skills and ensuring that educational resources are allocated to areas that directly impact student achievement.
