In the twilight of President Joe Biden's administration, there are allegations of collusion between White House officials and a coalition of Democrat governors, known as Governors Safeguarding Democracy.
The supposed aim of this collaboration was to obstruct the incoming agenda of President-elect Donald Trump. This information comes from a watchdog group and internal emails obtained from the coalition.
According to The Daily Signal, the exact date of the contentious meeting remains uncertain, with the likely dates being either December 16 or 17. The emails hint at the planning of the meeting but do not disclose the topics of discussion.
Governors Safeguarding Democracy, a faction of the Governors Action Alliance, is co-chaired by Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Colorado Governor Jared Polis. The emails in question were obtained by the private nonprofit watchdog group, Government Accountability and Oversight, through a public records request and subsequently shared with The Daily Signal.
The emails reveal that on December 2, Julia Spiegel, CEO of Governors Action Alliance, reached out to Democrat state officials across various states regarding plans for Governors Safeguarding Democracy. One of the agenda items was cryptically labeled "WH Meeting & Priority Asks."
The email further elaborated, "Gov. Pritzkers Chief of Staff Anne Caprera will host a call with the administration to discuss lock-in asks. If your office would like to join this meeting, please email Julia Spiegel by the end of this week."
On December 11, Allegra Chapman, managing director for Governors Safeguarding Democracy, sent an email to staffers for the governors of Illinois and Colorado. The subject line read, "Time to talk on Fri re WH mtg pre-call?"
Chapman wrote, "Hi team! Im reaching out now to set up a time for any/all offices planning to join the WH meeting next week (likely on Mon or Tues) to touch base first. That way, we can know who will be on next week, what the priorities are, what each offices ask(s) might be, and who will cover what on the call with the WH."
If the meeting did take place, it suggests that the outgoing Biden administration may have followed the precedent set by the previous Democrat administration, according to Chris Horner, attorney for Government Accountability and Oversight.
Horner drew parallels between this situation and the aftermath of the 2016 election when the outgoing Barack Obama administration initiated legal probes of the first Trump presidency. Obamas national security adviser, Susan Rice, was implicated in investigating incoming Trump administration officials.
"One cant help but be reminded by this of the outgoing Obama-Biden teams work to plant land mines and derail its successor during the 2017 transition," Horner told The Daily Signal.
Horner further questioned the possible meeting between Biden officials and staffers from Governors Safeguarding Democracy, asking, "What information did the Biden White House pass along to assist with this GSD (Governors Sock-puppeting for Donors) project; what were these priority asks; were any privileges or obligations violated in doing so; was Susan Rice involved, again; and, of course, will there be any accountability this time?
The emails from Spiegel and Chapman did not disclose what was discussed in the meeting. However, a subsequent email from Chapman to state officials on December 20, likely after the meeting, discussed immigration.
Chapman wrote, "Many offices worked with GovAct [Governors Action Alliance] to urge the Biden administration to finalize regulations that modernize and improve visa and employment authorization processes."
She continued, "The administration has now taken action to finalize rulemaking in three requested areas: H1-B modernization; Automatic Employment Authorization Extension; and H-2 visa modernization. Collectively, these rules have the impact of increasing protections for immigrants and improving outcomes for businesses in your communities in the face of anticipated federal actions next year."
Before the formation of Governors Safeguarding Democracy on November 13, following Trumps election, the Governors Action Alliance launched the Reproductive Freedom Alliance, an abortion advocacy group that claims to have spent $535 million to expand abortion at the state level.
The Governors Action Alliance, a project of the Global Impact Social Welfare Fund, is a left-leaning advocacy group that has granted funds to liberal groups advocating for gun control and stronger environmental regulations, as reported by the Capital Research Center.
Last year, the Governors Action Alliance received a $500,000 donation from liberal billionaire Pierre Omidyars group, the Democracy Fund.
