In a move that has sparked considerable debate, a New York Congresswoman has proposed a bill to recognize President Donald Trump's birthday as an official federal holiday.
The bill, dubbed the "Trumps Birthday and Flag Day Holiday Establishment Act," was introduced by Congresswoman Claudia Tenney on Friday.
According to The Independent, the proposed legislation aims to establish a new federal holiday on June 14, to be known as "Trumps Birthday and Flag Day." This date not only marks the birth of the former president but also commemorates the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the U.S. flag in 1777, an event celebrated as Flag Day.
In a press release, Tenney stated, This legislation would permanently codify a new federal holiday called Trumps Birthday and Flag Day on June 14 to honor this historic day." She further added, "Just as George Washingtons Birthday is codified as a federal holiday, this bill will add Trumps Birthday to this list, recognizing him as the founder of Americas Golden Age."
The Congresswoman emphasized that the proposed holiday would serve to enshrine President Trump's contributions to American greatness and the importance of the American Flag into law. "By designating Trumps Birthday and Flag Day as a federal holiday, we can ensure President Trumps contributions to American greatness and the importance of the American Flag are forever enshrined into law," Tenney's statement read.
The proposal comes at a time when the significance of the American flag has been a topic of discussion, with Trump himself having previously underscored its importance. Notably, one of his first executive orders after re-election was to mandate that all American flags be flown at full mast on inauguration day, irrespective of any mourning periods. This directive, which marked the fifth executive order of his term and the first unrelated to appointments, set a precedent for future inauguration days.
However, the announcement of the proposed holiday follows a series of unsettling incidents involving Congresswoman Tenney. Just weeks prior, she revealed that her district offices across Watertown, Lockport, Canandaigua, and Oswego, in upper New York state along the Canadian border, had to be closed due to violent threats made towards her staff, as reported by Spectrum News1.
Similarly, another New York Congress member, Rep. Nick Langworthy, experienced a disturbing incident when a suspicious package was found at his district office in Clarence, leading to an evacuation.
As of now, President Trump, who is expected to commence Russia-Ukraine peace talks in Saudi Arabia this week according to Politico, has not commented on the proposed flag legislation. Over the weekend, he was seen at the Daytona 500, completing a lap around the Daytona International Speedway track in an armored presidential limousine. The proposed holiday and the ensuing debate underscore the enduring influence of Trump's presidency and the polarizing views it continues to inspire.
