In a recent appearance on Fox News, former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich lauded President Donald Trump as potentially the "most consequential" leader since Abraham Lincoln, citing his bold approach to dismantling the entrenched American establishment.
Gingrich's remarks, made during an interview with Sean Hannity, underscore the former Speaker's belief that Trump's presidency is marked by a transformative agenda that challenges the status quo.
As reported by the Daily Caller, Gingrich's comments come amid heightened tensions between the Trump administration and Democratic lawmakers, who have been vocal in their opposition to the president's policies. These include his aggressive stance on illegal immigration and efforts to streamline government operations. During the "Hannity" segment, the discussion turned to the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), with Hannity accusing Democrats of misleading the public about the agency's financial mismanagement. "Democrats lied to the American people and would not disclose the true nature" of USAID's expenditures, Hannity asserted.
Gingrich elaborated on the issue, describing a "lobbyist bureaucratic empire" that has misappropriated taxpayer funds. "Look, you have to accept that there was a lobbyist bureaucratic empire, that that empire took your money, gave it to its friends, even if they were totally incompetent," he stated. He further criticized the inefficacy of systems funded by taxpayer dollars, emphasizing the need for reform. "Then youll find case after case where your money went out to systems that just dont work. Its crazy. And at that time, they were taking care of themselves."
Drawing a parallel to former President Ronald Reagan's foreign policy achievements, Gingrich praised Trump for his domestic focus. "What makes President Trump potentially the most consequential president since Abraham Lincoln is the fact that hes taking a sledgehammer, and he is pounding the establishment in a way that no one has since Franklin Roosevelt created it in the 1930s. Hes the first person," Gingrich remarked. He acknowledged Reagan's success in defeating the Soviet empire but noted that Trump has taken on the American establishment directly. "Im a great fan of Ronald Reagan," Gingrich said. "Reagan defeated the Soviet empire, but he didnt try to take on the American establishment. Trump has had the guts to go straight at it. I think the American people are going to be with him even more so when they learn how really sickeningly bad it is."
Despite the controversies surrounding USAID's programs, including those focused on LGBT advocacy and diversity initiatives, Democratic lawmakers continue to oppose Trump and figures like Elon Musk of the Department of Government Efficiency. Some, such as Democratic New Jersey Rep. LaMonica McIver, have even called for drastic measures, suggesting a "shutdown" of the Senate and declaring a "war" with the administration.
Nevertheless, a recent CBS News poll indicates that Trump enjoys robust support, with a 53% approval ratingthe highest of his presidency. The poll also reveals that 70% of Americans believe he is fulfilling his campaign promises, with significant majorities describing him as tough, energetic, and focused. These figures suggest that, despite ongoing political battles, Trump's approach resonates with a substantial portion of the American populace.
