In a tragic event in South Florida, a corrections deputy was fatally shot on Monday night in what officials are calling a "targeted" assault.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office reported that deputies were dispatched following reports of gunfire.
According to Fox News, upon arrival, law enforcement found a 39-year-old off-duty corrections deputy suffering from gunshot wounds. "Upon arrival, they found an adult male suffering from gunshot wounds. He was immediately transported to a local hospital for medical treatment," the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office (PBCSO) stated. Despite efforts to save him, the deputy succumbed to his injuries. The sheriff's office confirmed on social media that "this incident was targeted," though details remain sparse.
The deputy, whose identity remains undisclosed, had served with the agency for three years. In a solemn tribute, a ceremonial escort was conducted late Monday night, transporting the fallen deputy from St. Marys Hospital in West Palm Beach to the county medical examiners office. As of now, authorities have not identified a suspect, and the investigation is ongoing. The sheriff's office assured that further information will be shared as it becomes available.
The PBCSO expressed their deep sorrow over the loss, stating, "We are distraught to say the least." This incident underscores the dangers faced by law enforcement officers, even when off duty, and highlights the need for continued support and protection for those who serve and protect our communities. As the investigation unfolds, the community awaits answers and justice for the slain deputy.
