California Attorney General Rob Bonta has expressed his support for former Vice President Kamala Harris should she decide to pursue the governorship of California in 2026.
Bonta, who has held the position of attorney general since 2021, has announced his intention to seek re-election next year, thereby dispelling any rumors of his own gubernatorial ambitions. "Kamala Harris would be a great governor," Bonta remarked in a conversation with Politico. "I would support her if she ran. Ive always supported her in everything shes done. She would be field-clearing," he added, noting that he has not yet discussed the 2026 gubernatorial race directly with Harris.
As reported by Fox News, the current Democratic Governor, Gavin Newsom, is unable to seek re-election due to term limits. Harris, who has an extensive political background as San Francisco district attorney, California attorney general, and U.S. Senator, has been the subject of much speculation regarding her future political endeavors following her electoral defeat to President Donald Trump last November. Her potential paths include a gubernatorial run in California or another presidential bid in 2028.
