A Fontana, California teacher is now being investigated after forcing a middle-school student to say the N-word.
A video shows the teacher ordering the student to say the word and how uncomfortable the student was using the racial slur. Her justification? The N-word is in the dictionary, and the pupil should be able to say it.
Fox News reports, The Sequoia Middle School eighth-grader was reading Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain when he came across the N-word. The teacher was seen on video captured by one of the students classmates repeatedly ordering him to say the word despite him appearing uncomfortable using that type of language.
Other students say the entire exchange between the teacher and student made them uncomfortable. A few students wondered if the teacher was unaware it was a racial slur because she is from another country, but many say that doesnt excuse her actions.
The student that took a video of the exchange was taken out of the classroom. Other students that spoke with Fox regarding the incident say that the teacher continues talking about the altercation and defends her actions.
The District doesnt feel the same way. According to Fox News, While we acknowledge that this derogatory language comes from a novel first published in the late 1800s and that historical context is important to consider when discussing literature, the District does not condone the language that was used in the video or using that language outside of the context of discussing the novel, the Districts letter reads.
The District said that they are investigating the incident. However, they have not mentioned whether the teacher will be disciplined or, if so, what that discipline would look like. Many say the teacher had a racist itch because she allegedly told the slur over 15 times.
