Texas Governor Greg Abbott has enacted a series of executive orders aimed at bolstering the state's role in supporting President Donald Trump's immigration enforcement initiatives.
These directives are designed to enhance border security measures, including aiding in the apprehension of migrants and identifying potential land for government leasing.
As reported by Newsweek, Abbott's orders align with Trump's longstanding focus on immigration, a key issue during his presidential campaign. While many Americans advocate for immigration reform, there remains a divide on the execution of policies such as deportations. A recent Ipsos poll, conducted from January 2 to 10, revealed that 55 percent of voters either strongly or somewhat support deportations. Furthermore, a significant 88 percent endorse the deportation of immigrants with criminal records. The poll also highlighted a bipartisan consensus that the current immigration system is flawed.
Texas has been a pivotal player in addressing the challenges at the U.S.-Mexico border, particularly under the Biden administration. The state has allocated over $13 billion to Operation Lonestar, an initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration. Abbott's executive orders mandate state agencies to assist federal officers in enforcing federal immigration laws. The Texas military is tasked with formulating a plan to work alongside the U.S. Army to "regain and maintain operational control of the southern border."
Additionally, state agencies are instructed to aid in constructing border barriers, share intelligence on foreign terrorist organizations, including Mexican drug cartels, and identify "additional detention space" for migrants suspected of being in the U.S. unlawfully. These measures come in the wake of Trump's announcement regarding the preparation of a facility at Guantnamo Bay, Cuba, to accommodate up to 30,000 deported migrants.
In a further demonstration of commitment, Abbott dispatched 400 Texas National Guard troops to the Rio Grande Valley in South Texas on Monday. These troops are set to assist the U.S. military and Border Patrol agents in their efforts. Governor Abbott emphasized the state's proactive stance, stating, "For the past four years, Texas has worked around the clock to defend our southern border while former President Joe Biden refused to protect our country from an invasion he allowed. Now, we have a Commander-in-Chief in the White House who will do what is necessary to protect Americans."
Abbott continued, "Today, I issued five Executive Orders directing Texas state agencies to partner with the Trump Administration to enforce the rule of law and help secure the homeland. Just like President Donald Trump and his Administration, Texas will do what is necessary to keep our country safe."
These executive orders underscore Texas' unwavering dedication to addressing border security challenges, particularly through collaboration with federal agencies under Trump's leadership. As the state continues to grapple with illegal border crossings, further operations are anticipated in the coming months to mitigate the influx of undocumented migrants.
