Portland Police Chiefs Open Letter On Immigration Might Just Be The Most CONTROVERSIAL Yet!

Portland Police Chief Bob Day has reaffirmed the department's stance on refraining from participating in immigration enforcement, emphasizing the city's longstanding sanctuary status.

In an open letter addressed to the public, Chief Day underscored the Portland Police Bureau's dedication to ensuring that all residents, regardless of immigration status, feel secure and protected.

As reported by The Post Millennial, Oregon has maintained its sanctuary state designation since 1987, which legally prohibits Portland police from engaging in immigration enforcement activities. Chief Day stated, It is paramount to recognize the fear and uncertainty this creates in our immigrant communities. I want everyone to feel safe and protected, which is why it is important to understand that the Portland Police Bureau does not engage in immigration enforcement. This statement comes amid heightened tensions surrounding immigration policies and enforcement.

In a recent development, Newsweek highlighted an incident involving an illegal immigrant detained near Portland during a DEA investigation. However, no additional reports of ICE activities have surfaced. Chief Day expressed pride in the Portland Police Bureau's efforts to foster community engagement, particularly within immigrant communities. I take great pride in PPBs community engagement and continuous efforts over the years. We have long-standing relationships within the immigrant communities and Portland-based organizations that advocate and serve these families, he noted.

Portland Mayor Keith Wilson and Oregon Governor Tina Kotek have both reiterated their commitment to maintaining the city's sanctuary status. Meanwhile, the Department of Justice has directed federal prosecutors to scrutinize state or local officials potentially obstructing the Trump administration's initiatives to curb illegal immigration. This directive highlights the ongoing tension between federal immigration policies and local sanctuary laws, raising questions about the balance between national security and community trust.
