Democratic Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania has voiced his dissatisfaction following the defeat of the International Criminal Court (ICC) sanctions bill, a measure blocked by his Democratic colleagues in the Senate.
Fetterman stood alone among Democrats in supporting the GOP's Illegitimate Court Counteraction Act, which failed to advance past a procedural vote on Tuesday.
As reported by the Daily Caller, Fetterman took to X to express his dismay, stating he was deeply disappointed by the outcome. He emphasized that his vote follows Israelnot the ICC that equivocated the democratically elected leader of our special ally to the terrorists and rapists of Hamas. The proposed legislation aimed to mandate sanctions by former President Donald Trump on ICC members who sought to investigate, arrest, detain or prosecute U.S. citizens or those of U.S. allies that do not acknowledge the ICC's jurisdiction.
In 2020, Trump had previously imposed sanctions on ICC officials, a decision that was later reversed by President Joe Biden shortly after assuming office. The ICC's issuance of an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu in November, citing crimes against humanity, has been met with criticism, with some labeling it as antisemitic.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune called on Democrats to support the sanctions bill, highlighting the illegitimate targeting of a key U.S. ally as a matter of concern for all, according to Jewish Insider. This legislative action marks the most unified Democratic opposition to a GOP initiative since President Trump's inauguration, as noted by Axios.
Fetterman, who became the first Democratic senator to meet with Trump in January, faced criticism for his visit to Mar-a-Lago. Responding to the backlash, he expressed his weariness with the venom in American politics, following remarks from "The View" co-host Ana Navarro.
