Retired NYPD Inspector Paul Mauro recently made an appearance on Fox Business, where he forecasted that the Trump administration's impending investigation into the FBI could reveal some disconcerting truths.
The former inspector's comments come in the wake of President Trump's directive to preserve all pertinent records for a potential corruption probe. This move by the president has sparked questions about the motivations and consequences of the FBI's abrupt discontinuation of its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs.
According to the Daily Caller, Mauro suggested that this investigation could be the beginning of a larger, more complex narrative. He expressed his concern that federal and local law enforcement agencies have shifted their focus away from their primary duty. He stated, "[But] social engineering is," implying that the agencies are prioritizing social engineering over law enforcement. Mauro further added, "This is stuff that comes from the top when we had a rudderless executive, and very clearly it ends but I think this drama is just beginning, because Im sure the Trump Administration has a good idea of what they see when they start turning the rocks over and its not going to be pretty.
Mauro also elaborated on the significance of the preservation order, indicating that it could be a precursor to a serious investigation. He said, This is really developing into something that we didnt see coming. The Trump administration has signaled that they were not going to be looking to engage in any lawfare or these sort of backwards-looking investigations. But this looks like theyre quite serious about it. When you put them on notice that they better not destroy any records, you dont have to be Sherlock Holmes to see some sort of an initiation of a probe here.
The shuttering of the FBI's DEI unit occurred just days before Trump's inauguration, leading to allegations of lawfare. However, Mauro believes that the investigation is likely warranted, given the FBI's recent history. He said, Im not saying that its not justified, just to be clear. What I meant by that is the fact that theyre going to initiate a probe. I think it is almost certainly justified in light of the fact that if you look at the FBIs history here over the last four years, weve had things like the arrival of Tren de Aragua. We havent had one federal case relative to that agency, that group that Ive seen. You could have had conspiracy cases of all sorts there. They turned a blind eye to that. At the same time, you had Jewish students on campus who couldnt even get to class.
The FBI confirmed the closure of its DEI office on Thursday. An FBI spokesperson said in an emailed statement to The Hill, In recent weeks, the FBI took steps to close the Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI), effective by December 2024. This decision has been met with escalating criticism, especially following a terrorist attack in New Orleans on New Years Day that resulted in at least 15 deaths and numerous injuries. The investigation into the FBI and its actions promises to be a significant development in the coming months.
