In an unexpected turn of events, illegal immigrants are reportedly choosing to self-deport ahead of the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, as per a recent report by NewsNation journalist Jorge Ventura.
This voluntary exodus from the United States is believed to be a direct response to the anticipated border policies of the incoming Trump administration, which include mass deportations, and a shift in Mexican legislation that now permits the acceptance of non-Mexican deportees.
As reported by The Post Millennial, immigration lawyer Rolando Vasquez has noted a significant number of his clients opting for self-deportation to evade potential detention by Trump's federal immigration agents. A subset of these individuals is choosing Mexico as their destination, a decision influenced by new laws that could significantly impact Cuban and Venezuelan migrants. These countries typically do not accept deportation flights from the United States, but may be more amenable to accepting them from Mexico.
Vasquez stated, "This is causing many migrants to leave on their own, knowing that they're either going to be deported to their home country or be deported to Mexico." He added, "The overwhelming majority of them do not want to be in Mexico."
Despite this, Mexico is not a favored destination for many migrants due to the country's notorious criminal cartels. Sources in Mexico have informed Ventura that newly deported migrants are likely to fall prey to exploitation, extortion, or abduction by the country's numerous cartels and human smugglers.
The Biden administration witnessed the largest immigration influx in American history, with an annual average of approximately 2.5 million illegal migrants entering the country between 2021 and 2023, as per data from the Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
Last month, border officials informed NewsNation that illegal migrants engaged in asylum proceedings had abruptly terminated their cases and moved towards ports of entry that would facilitate their departure before Trump's inauguration.
During his 2024 presidential campaign, Donald Trump championed various border security policies, including the resumption of border wall construction, the eradication of sanctuary cities and states, and the execution of the largest mass deportation operation in the nation's history. These policies, it appears, have already begun to influence the decisions of illegal immigrants, even before Trump officially assumes office.
