Martina Navratilova, the renowned former women's tennis champion, has voiced her strong disapproval of the Democratic Party's stance on the inclusion of transgender individuals in women's and girls' sports.
This comes in the wake of the recent vote on the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act in the House of Representatives. The bill, which was passed with unanimous support from the Republican majority, received backing from only two Democratic House members, leaving Navratilova and other advocates of the bill disappointed.
According to Fox News, Navratilova has been a vocal critic of the Democratic Party's support for trans inclusion in women's sports. In a series of posts on social media, she expressed her disappointment with the Democrats' response to the bill. "Shame on the Democrats who really dont care about women, girls, and their safety, fairness," Navratilova wrote, reacting to the news that only two Democratic House members voted in favor of the bill.
In a subsequent post, the tennis legend urged more Democrats to oppose trans inclusion in women's sports, suggesting that fear of losing re-election might be preventing them from speaking up. "More Dems need to step up here. I know many who agree but are scared to speak up because of re-election. I say do the right thing. Grow a spine," she stated.
Navratilova's criticism of the left's stance on this issue is not a new development. In a post from December, she expressed her frustration that the Republicans, rather than the Democrats, were addressing this nationwide controversy. "And I am so mad that the Republicans captured this issue shame on all the elected Democrats who keep silent on this!" she wrote.
Navratilova's advocacy for women's sports extends beyond her social media posts. She was a prominent figure at the Independent Women's Forum's "Take Back Title IX" rally in June, where she and other notable women athletes opposed the Biden administrations Title IX rewrite. At the rally, she shared her experience of being labeled a homophobe and a bigot by liberals for her stance on trans inclusion. "Now, its, Oh, youre a homophobe. Go figure. Ive been out since 81, yeah, Im a homophobe," she said. "Youre a bigot, youre a transphobe, youre a Nazi, youre a fascist, youre a communist, everything and everything in between. And this is coming from the left. I am the left! My people are turning on me. Theyre turning on us, women, who speak up for womens sex-based rights."
Navratilova has also been outspoken about individual cases of trans inclusion in sports. She previously labeled Italian sprinter Valentina Petrillo, a trans woman who competed in the Paralympics, a "pathetic cheater." In March, she made a plea to "keep women's sports female."
