In a recent development, Canada's ambassador to the United States, Kirsten Hillman, has announced that Canada is ready to increase its purchase of American goods.
This move comes in response to President-elect Donald Trump's threats of imposing a 25% tariff on the country, a move that has already begun to influence trade relations between the two nations.
As reported by the Daily Caller, Trump has been vocal about his dissatisfaction with the trade deficit between the U.S. and its northern neighbor. His bold proposition of annexing Canada as the 51st state has stirred the waters of international diplomacy. In an interview with The Associated Press, Ambassador Hillman indicated Canada's willingness to appease the incoming president by sourcing more goods from the U.S. "He has a negotiating style which involves positioning himself in the best way he can for discussions," Hillman said. "We are happy to source what we can from the United States."
The ambassador pointed out potential areas where Canada could increase its consumption of American products, with military procurements being a prime candidate. Hillman specifically mentioned the upcoming replacement of Canada's entire submarine fleet as a possible opportunity for increased U.S. sales. "We have some big military procurements coming up for example, replacing our entire submarine fleet. Maybe those are some purchases that can happen from the U.S.," she suggested.
The U.S. trade deficit with Canada was nearly $68 billion in 2023, a decrease of $12.2 billion from the previous year, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis. The overall U.S. trade deficit was over $770 billion in 2023, the highest globally.
Hillman also credited Trump for the swift creation of Canadas $1 billion-plus border security and immigration plan. She stated, We have moved really quickly, Ill be honest, because President Trump focused the mind to put together a full package of improvements. This comes in light of data from the U.S. Customs And Border Protection showing that almost 24,000 individuals were apprehended along the northern border in the fiscal year 2024, a 140% increase from the previous year.
Brian Hughes, the Trump-Vance Transition Spokesman, reiterated Trump's commitment to protecting American workers from unfair foreign practices. "President Trump has promised tariff policies that protect working Americans from the unfair practices of foreign companies and foreign markets, Hughes told the Daily Caller News Foundation. As he did in his first term, he will implement economic and trade policies to make life affordable and more prosperous for our nation, while simultaneously leveling the playing field for American manufacturers.
