Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot will be handing over the keys to the Windy City after an intense race for office.
Two Democrat candidates went head to head, with the pair taking the weekend to woo undecided voters. A progressive candidate that Bernie Sanders endorsed wound up winning the election.
Fox News reports, Progressive Cook County Commissioner Brandon Johnson defeated his moderate opponent, former Chicago Public Schools CEO Paul Vallas, to take the Chicago mayors race, replacing outgoing Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who came in third before the runoff.
The race was close as both candidates garnered support from different groups. Candidate Vallas had the police union and several significant businesses, while Johnson had the teachers. Outgoing Mayor Lori Lightfoot became the first Chicago Mayor to lose re-election in four decades.
The unchecked crime level in Chicago played a significant role in the election, including why former Mayor Lightfoot came in third.
In 2021, homicides in Chicago were at a 25-year high. Fox host Judge Jeanine Pirro celebrated the news of Lightfoots loss and called it a win for the people of Chicago.
Judge Pirro pointed out that Lightfoot didnt seem to comprehend that the safety of the people of Chicago should always come first. Pirro says she did little to care for people of color or make life safer or better.
According to Fox News, the Judge continued, She could have done that. She has a lot of power, but her crime is up. What is it - murder rate 59%? And she just said that they cut back on the murder rates or something bizarre like that? Let her sing and dance away to her next job.
On the other hand, Johnson has said that safety and tackling crime are his top priorities. He wants to bring together a city that has become divided and help find solutions to the problems that have plagued the city for years, such as the increasing homicide rate.
