Elizabeth May, the leader of Canada's Green Party, has made a bold and somewhat audacious proposition to President-elect Donald Trump, suggesting that the states of California, Oregon, and Washington should consider becoming part of Canada.
This audacious proposition, laced with a certain level of arrogance, reveals a politician who seems to be out of touch with the realities of her own nation's challenges.
According to Gateway Pundit, Trump had previously expressed his frustration on Truth Social, noting that the United States is "subsidizing Canada to the tune of over $100,000,000 a year." He also pointed out that many Canadians might actually welcome the idea of becoming a state of the U.S., arguing that it would save them a significant amount on taxes and military expenses. "No one can answer why we subsidize Canada to the tune of over $100,000,000 a year? Makes no sense! Many Canadians want Canada to become the 51st State. They would save massively on taxes and military protection. I think it is a great idea. 51st State!!!" Trump wrote.
However, May dismissed Trump's proposal during a press conference, responding with a dismissive retort. "We do not aspire to be the 51st state If it was a joke, it was never funny, and it ends now," May said. She further added, "No matter how many Trump photos of him in business suits striding Swiss mountains he posts with a Canadian flag, were not intimidated."
In a surprising turn of events, May then extended an invitation to the states of California, Oregon, and Washington to join Canada, highlighting Canadian social programs and strict gun control policies as potential benefits. "Hey, Donald, have we got a deal for you. You think we want to be the 51st state? Nah, but maybe California would like to be the 11th province. How about it? California, Oregon, Washingtonyouve got geography in common with us. And not only that, weve already got a carbon trading system between California and Quebec. Weve got some strong alliances on our West Coast from British Columbia. Theres been a lot of academic papers on the idea of Cascadia," May said.
She further appealed to the governors of these states, suggesting a referendum for their citizens. "So, California, Governor Newsom, Washington State, Jay Inslee, and newly elected Governor of Oregon, Tina Kotakhow about it? Want to put a referendum to your citizens? This is what you get: free health care. Universal free health care. No more one-year-olds who suddenly fall off the Medicaid list, and their parents are in the news because theyre trying to do a GoFundMe so they can get their daughter to a doctor. Universal free health care. And guess what? Those laws your Congress is too afraid to pass because of the National Gun Lobbyweve already got our strict gun laws."
While May's proposition may seem outlandish, it does raise questions about the relationship between the U.S. and Canada, and the potential benefits and drawbacks of such a radical change. However, it remains to be seen how this proposal will be received by the leaders and citizens of the states in question, and indeed, by President-elect Trump himself.
