In a recent ceremony certifying the 2024 election results, Vice President Kamala Harris was placed in the unenviable position of announcing her own defeat.
This event, which was met with applause from Congress members, was discussed by host Jon Stewart, who couldn't help but express his discomfort at the situation.
According to Mediaite, Stewart began his commentary by referencing the Capitol riots of January 6, 2021. He then moved on to the "ultimate indignity" of the same date in 2024, where Harris, as Vice President, was obligated to serve as the master of ceremonies. Stewart empathized with Harris, stating, Of course, the ultimate indignity of this January 6 is that Donald Trumps opponent Kamala Harris, because she was the vice president, serves as the master of ceremonies Poor baby.
Stewart proceeded to show a video of Harris announcing the 2024 election results, during which Congress members stood and applauded President-elect Donald Trump's victory. Stewart's reaction was one of disbelief, as he said, Thats gotta sting. Shes like, Um, I can hear you. God damn, and added, Its like attending your own funeral and even the mourners are like, Woohoo! I cant imagine anything that would be more uncomfortable than standing there while the crowd applauds your opponent.
Adding to the spectacle, Stewart showed a clip of Democrats in the House cheering and applauding Harris after she read out her own losing number of votes. He couldn't help but mock the situation, saying, That sounded louder! Theres a lot of joy in that room! I think she could still win this thing!
Following the official certification of Trump as the next president, Harris made a statement emphasizing the importance of the day and the peaceful transfer of power. She said, Well, today was obviously a very important day and it was about what should be the norm and what the American people should be able to take for granted, which is that one of the most important pillars of our democracy is that there will be a peaceful transfer of power.
Harris continued to uphold her commitment to the Constitution, stating, And today I did what I have done my entire career, which is take seriously the oath that I have taken many times to support and defend the Constitution of the United States, which included today performing my constitutional duties to ensure that the people of America, the voters of America, will have their votes counted, that those votes matter and that they will determine then the outcome of an election.
In a surprising turn of events, former Vice President Mike Pence commended Harris for her role in the certification process, labeling her actions as particularly admirable. This unexpected praise from a political adversary underscores the significance of the peaceful transition of power, even in the face of personal defeat.
