In a recent live call-in session on C-SPAN, a man identifying himself as Glenn, a former Republican from California, made a controversial call for an "insurrection" against former President Donald Trump.
The unexpected comment led the network to promptly cut away from the call.
According to Mediaite, the incident occurred during a segment hosted by Greta Brawner, where viewers were invited to share their thoughts on the House Speaker vote and the first day of the 119th Congress. The new Congress sees the Republicans holding a slim majority by a single vote.
Glenn, the caller, expressed his dissatisfaction with House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), describing him as a "horrible" leader. He argued that Johnson should not be reelected, despite Trump's endorsement of Johnson ahead of the vote. Glenn, who identified himself as an independent, stated that he was a former Republican and would "never vote" for Johnson.
As the conversation progressed, Glenn revealed that his departure from the Republican Party was largely due to his refusal to support Trump following the January 6 Capitol riot. He referred to the former president as an "insurrectionist" and expressed his desire for an insurrection against Trump before his inauguration on January 20.
The exchange between Brawner and Glenn went as follows:
Brawner asked, "Your message to lawmakers?"
Glenn responded, "I would really not vote Johnson in as Speaker. Sorry. He was horrible, he held up all the financing, he is just not a good Speaker, nobody trusts him, I dont trust him. I was a Republican, I am now Independent, and I would never vote for the man.
When Brawner inquired about his switch from Republican to Independent, Glenn replied, "Donald Trump. Sorry. I cannot support an insurrectionist. I just cant. And I would really love to see Democrats and Independents do an insurrection on Donald Trump.
The abrupt call for an insurrection against Trump, a sentiment that goes against traditional conservative values, underscores the deep divisions within the Republican Party. It also raises questions about the future direction of the party, particularly in light of the recent Capitol riot and the subsequent fallout. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges that lie ahead in healing the nation's political divide.
