In a surprising turn of events, comedian Roy Wood Jr., known for his appearances on "The Daily Show," brought up a sensitive chapter in CNN's history during the network's New Year's Eve celebration.
When offered a shot by hosts Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen, Wood Jr. declined, stating, "Oh no. No, I don't. The last Black man to drink on this network got fired. I'm going to keep it with water for right now. I need some stability."
According to Fox News, Wood Jr.'s comment seemed to be a veiled reference to former CNN host Don Lemon, who was known for partaking in drinks during the network's New Year's specials. Lemon's tenure at CNN ended in 2023 following a series of controversies and the failure of the newly launched morning show "CNN This Morning."
Lemon, a host with a known liberal bias, was moved from his primetime slot to a three-person hosting team for the revamped morning program under then-CEO Chris Licht. However, the show failed to gain traction. Lemon's controversial remarks about Nikki Haley, suggesting that the then 51-year-old was no longer "in her prime," further strained his relationship with the network and his colleagues. Lemon's tenure at CNN ended two months later, with Licht himself exiting the network in June of the same year.
Lemon has continued to make headlines with his outspoken criticism of supporters of former President Donald Trump, particularly over disagreements within Trump's base regarding H-1B visas. Lemon's comments were notably harsh, stating, "Youve been co-opted because you're in a f---ing cult and you don't even realize it because you have stupid MAGA brain and you don't get it. How stupid and dumb are you?"
Despite the backlash, Lemon stood by his comments on his YouTube show, clarifying that he was not referring to all Trump supporters, but specifically to those he termed "MAGA-brained" who blindly excuse any behavior from Trump or the MAGA movement. He further criticized Trump supporters for their "hypocrisy" in attacking him for his language while defending their "cult leader."
Lemon's criticism extended beyond Trump supporters to Time Magazine, which he lambasted for selecting Trump as its Person of the Year, calling the decision a "joke." He suggested that the honor could have been bestowed on someone who truly stands for democracy.
While Wood Jr.'s comment on CNN's New Year's Eve special may have been lighthearted, it served as a stark reminder of the network's past controversies and the ongoing polarized political climate. As the comedian continues to co-host CNN's weekly Saturday comedy quiz show, "Have I Got News for You," alongside Michael Ian Black and Amber Ruffin, one can only wonder what other candid moments may unfold on live television.
