The former President, Donald Trump, is once again at the center of a political storm, with calls for a special prosecutor to probe the matter.
The controversy stems from President Joe Biden's dissatisfaction with his Attorney General, Merrick Garland, for his perceived leniency towards Trump, as reported by The Washington Post.
According to Gateway Pundit, Biden is reportedly irate that Garland did not take more aggressive action against Trump. The President is said to harbor regrets about his decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race, believing he could have triumphed over Trump. Biden's disappointment with Garland also stems from the Attorney General's decision to allow the Department of Justice (DOJ) to prosecute his son, Hunter Biden, while allegedly failing to adequately impede Trump.
In November 2022, Garland appointed a special counsel to investigate Trump, a mere three days after the former president announced his 2024 bid for the White House. By June 2023, Trump was indicted on 37 federal counts in Miami by Jack Smith for lawfully storing presidential records at his Mar-a-Lago estate, which was under the protection of Secret Service agents. By September 2023, Trump faced four additional counts in Smith's January 6 case in DC, including conspiracy to defraud the United States and conspiracy against rights.
However, these cases crumbled when the Supreme Court ruled that US Presidents have immunity from prosecution for 'official acts.' Biden's frustration with Garland is rooted in his belief that the Attorney General delayed too long in prosecuting Trump.
"In private, Biden has also said he should have picked someone other than Merrick Garland as attorney general, complaining about the Justice Departments slowness under Garland in prosecuting Trump, and its aggressiveness in prosecuting Bidens son Hunter, according to people familiar with his comments," The Washington Post reported.
The Washington Post further reported, "Biden was persuaded, and some Democrats believe the decision had devastating results. Had the Justice Department moved faster to prosecute Trump for allegedly seeking to overturn the 2020 election and mishandling classified documents, they say, the former president might have faced a politically damaging trial before the election."
Mike Davis, former Gorsuch clerk and founder of the Article 3 Project, has called for Trump's Justice Department to investigate the alleged weaponization of Biden's DOJ. Conspiracy against rights (18 U.S.C. 241) is a very serious federal felony, Davis stated. This ongoing saga underscores the deep-seated political divisions in the country, with the potential for further legal battles ahead.
