LSU Tigers Angel Reese, a Womens Basketball team star player, has drawn further social media criticism for her recent remarks regarding first lady Jill Bidens invitation to the White House.
Biden expressed her intent to invite both LSU Tigers and Iowa Hawkeyes to the White House, despite the latter teams defeat by the Tigers in the recent NCAA Tournament final, 102-85. Reese quote-tweeted ESPN's report featuring Biden's statement, and the womens basketball player shared her opinion of both the winner and loser being invited to the White House.
Adding three laughing emojis before her comment, Reese called the situation a joke. It is unusual for the losing team of a championship to get invited to the White House. Still, Biden feels that the evolution of womens sports since Title IX was enacted in 1972 makes it appropriate.
During the Elite Eight game against Louisville, Reese taunted the national player of the year, Iowa's Caitlin Clark, by doing John Cenas famous You cant see me move as she waved her hand across her face while staring at Clark. Reese then followed Clark around the court, making the same move, pointing to her ring finger to reference the championship title. Reese mimicked what Caitlin Clark did when she played the Elite Eight game against Louisville.
Many athletes and media personalities have different opinions surrounding the incident. Dave Portnoy from Barstool Sports called Reese a "classless piece of s---" in a tweet. ESPNs Stephen
A. Smith, pointed out that Reese was only doing what Clark did before and didnt get any negative responses for her actions. "Heres the reality of the situation: [Clark] instigated this kind of stuff. Lets call it what it is. She was waving, she was doing the [John] Cena. How about what she did to Raven Johnson? She didnt just go into the lane and not guard her against South Carolina in the national semifinal. She waved her off, she didnt mind being disrespectful. So, why is it that were hesitant to bring that up?" Smith commented on First Take that aired Monday.
After the game Reese was interviewed and said, "Im happy. All year, I was critiqued about who I was. The narrative I dont fit the narrative. I dont fit the box you all want me to be in. Im too hood. Im too ghetto. You told me that all year," Reese added.
"But when other people do it you all dont say nothing. So, this is for the girls that look like me. Thats going to speak up for what they believe in. Its unapologetically you, and thats what I did it for tonight. It was bigger than me tonight. It was bigger than me. Twitter is going to go in a rage every time. And, I mean, Im happy. I feel like I helped grow womens basketball this year. Im super happy and excited. Im looking forward to celebrating and then next season."
It is unclear if the White House invitation will be extended to the Iowa team as well.
