In a surprising turn of events, Congressman Matt Gaetz has hinted at the possibility of vying for the Senate seat left vacant by Marco Rubio.
Gaetz, who recently won re-election with a comfortable margin, has confirmed that he will not be returning to Congress, sparking curiosity about his future political endeavors.
As reported by Gateway Pundit, Gaetz addressed the Turning Point USA conference in Phoenix, where he hinted at his potential bid for the Senate. "We have been asked which perch I will be fighting from next, and some of you throughout this conference have even given me a few suggestions, Gaetz stated. He further added, It seems I may not have had enough support in the United States Senate, referring to the opposition he faced in the upper chamber during his nomination as attorney general.
Gaetz then dropped the bombshell, saying, Maybe Ill just run for Marco Rubios vacant seat in the United States Senate. Enjoyed some of those folks, and my friend Steve Bannon and others have suggested that I return to the House of Representatives on Jan. 3, but I would remind Steve when he got out of prison, he didnt punch a guard on the way out. Gaetz's comments left the audience in suspense about his next political move.
In his speech, Gaetz also emphasized the power of the citizen, quoting President James Madison. It was [President] James Madison who said that the most powerful position in America would not be congressman or senator or even president, but that of citizen because we put such an obligation on the citizenry to ignite the patriotism that the country needs, he said.
However, it remains unclear whether Gaetz was hinting at replacing Rubio for his current term or planning to run for the seat when it comes up for re-election in 2028.
Rubio's acceptance of the Secretary of State role in the Trump administration has given Florida Governor Ron DeSantis the chance to appoint a new senator. There was speculation that Lara Trump, Donald Trumps daughter-in-law, might be a suitable candidate for the role. However, she recently withdrew her name from consideration.
After an incredible amount of thought, contemplation, and encouragement from so many, I have decided to remove my name from consideration for the United States Senate, she wrote on the X platform. She expressed her gratitude for the support she received during her tenure as RNC co-chair during the high-stakes election.
Governor DeSantis is anticipated to announce his appointment for the vacant Senate seat in early January. As the political landscape continues to shift, the eyes of the nation remain fixed on Florida, waiting to see who will fill the shoes of Marco Rubio in the Senate.
