The Biden-Harris administration has recently declared an additional $4.
28 billion in student loan forgiveness, a move that comes as both President Biden and Vice President Harris prepare to vacate the White House.
This substantial financial relief is set to benefit 54,900 public workers, offering them a reprieve from their student loan obligations.
As reported by Fox News, Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona expressed his satisfaction with the administration's efforts in a statement released on Friday. "Four years ago, the Biden-Harris Administration made a pledge to Americas teachers, service members, nurses, first responders, and other public servants that we would fix the broken Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program, and Im proud to say that we delivered," he said. This recent action brings the total loan forgiveness approved by the Biden administration to a staggering $180 billion, impacting nearly 5 million borrowers.
Cardona further elaborated, "With the approval of another $4.28 billion in loan forgiveness for nearly 55,000 public servants, the Administration has secured nearly $180 billion in life-changing student debt relief for nearly five million borrowers." He attributed the success of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program's transformation to the leadership of President Biden and Vice President Harris, who he described as being "relentlessly and unapologetically focused on making government deliver for everyday working people."
The Biden-Harris administration has lauded the program for its role in incentivizing public servants to commit to their careers, offering to forgive the remaining balance of their loans after they've made 120 qualifying monthly payments. The relief announced includes beneficiaries of the administrations limited PSLF waiver, a temporary opportunity that ended in October 2022, as well as those who have benefited from regulatory improvements made to the program during this administration.
However, the road to student loan forgiveness has not been without its challenges. During his 2020 presidential campaign, Biden pledged to forgive student loans for millions of Americans. Despite this promise, his administration has faced numerous legal obstacles in their attempts to eradicate hundreds of billions of dollars in debt. After the Supreme Court ruled that the administration's first attempt at broad-based student loan forgiveness was an overreach of the executive branch's authority under the Constitution, Biden and his team began exploring alternative methods to provide relief.
As the Biden administration's term comes to an end, the future of its student loan forgiveness plans remains uncertain under the incoming leadership of President-elect Trump. While he has not provided specific details on how he will address the issue, he has expressed his intention to overhaul the entire education system during his term.
