In a recent interview, Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) urged critics of President-elect Donald Trump to give him an opportunity to fulfill his promises for his second term.
Romney's comments came as he reflected on the results of the recent elections during a Sunday CNN interview with Jake Tapper on State of the Union.
According to The Daily Wire, Romney asserted, Donald Trump won. He won overwhelmingly. He said what he was going to do, and thats what hes doing. The senator further addressed the criticisms aimed at Trump's appointments and policies, stating, I mean, people are saying, oh, I dont like this appointment or this policy that hes talking about.' But those are the things he said he was going to do when he ran. So you cant complain about someone who does what he said he was going to do.
Romney, while acknowledging his disagreements with Trump on certain issues, expressed his support for many of the President-elect's policy fronts. He encouraged critics to reserve judgment, saying, And I agree with him on a lot of policy fronts. I disagree with him on some things. But its like, OK, give him a chance to do what he said hes going to do and see how it works out.
The Utah senator also addressed concerns about Trump potentially using the justice system against his political adversaries. He said, I dont know how much of what the president says is hyperbole, because there was a lot of this person ought to be jailed and that person ought to be jailed that was said during the last two campaigns.
Romney expressed his belief that Trump would likely focus on the future, adding, People who committed crimes, Im sure, will be prosecuted. But I think thats few and far between. This statement underscores the senator's faith in the President-elect's ability to prioritize the nation's future over personal vendettas.
