In a recent revelation, Inspector General Michael Horowitz's report disclosed that 26 FBI confidential human sources were present in the crowd during the events of January 6, 2021.
The report further detailed that three of these individuals were specifically requested by the FBI to be there, and one of them even entered the Capitol Building. In addition, three more confidential human sources who were present independently also made their way into the Capitol. Interestingly, none of these individuals have faced prosecution.
According to The Post Millennial, US Attorney Matthew Graves stated, "The D.C. U.S. Attorney's Office generally has not charged those individuals whose only crime on January 6, 2021 was to enter the restricted grounds surrounding the Capitol." He added that this approach has led to the Office declining to charge hundreds of individuals, and the treatment of the confidential human sources (CHSs) has been consistent with this approach.
The report also shed light on the FBI's limited role in the response to the events of January 6, attributing it to the Department of Homeland Security's decision not to categorize it as a high-security level event. Horowitz affirmed that the FBI was prepared for what is now referred to as their "supporting role."
The report further elaborated that out of the 26 confidential human sources present in the crowd, the FBI had specifically asked three to attend to report "on specific known concerns relating to domestic terrorism." Of these three, two entered the restricted area around the Capitol, while the third made his way into the Capitol building itself.
Importantly, the report clarified that none of those requested by the FBI to attend were instructed or authorized to enter either the building or the restricted area, nor were they directed to engage in any illegal activities. The remaining 23 confidential human sources present were there on their own accord. Of these, three entered the Capitol, while another 11 ventured into the restricted area around the building.
The report underscored that these confidential human sources were not undercover agents but individuals who had previously collaborated with the FBI. These sources were already part of the groups they accompanied to the events of January 6, and subsequently became sources for the FBI. As this story continues to unfold, further updates are anticipated.
