NBC host Kristen Welker has recently come under fire for posing a question that has been deemed "deeply troubling" by a prominent elections expert.
In an interview with President-elect Trump, which was broadcasted by the network on Sunday, Welker's line of questioning has sparked controversy.
Marc Elias, founder of Democracy Docket and a seasoned elections attorney, highlighted one particular question by Welker that has drawn criticism. Welker, who previously faced ridicule for mispronouncing President Joe Biden's name during a live report, asked Trump, "Yes. And sir, I dont have to tell you this, because youve talked about it. It comes at a time when the country is deeply divided, and now youre going to be leading this country for the next four years. For the sake of unifying this country, will you concede the 2020 election and turn the page on that chapter?"
Trump's response was a firm refusal, stating, "No. No, why would I do that? But let me just tell you --" before being interrupted.
Elias expressed his concern over Welker's question, stating, "This question from Kristen Welker was deeply troubling." He argued that Trump should concede the election not for the sake of unity, but because he lost and his lies have led to the events of January 6, undermining our democracy.
Elias concluded with a hope that Welker's question was merely a misstep and not an attempt to obscure the truth for personal gain. This incident serves as a reminder of the critical role journalists play in holding public figures accountable and the importance of asking the right questions.
