Matt Gaetz, the former Florida congressman, continues to express unwavering support for Donald Trump, despite the recent collapse of his aspirations to become attorney general in the forthcoming administration.
Gaetz, who recently withdrew his candidacy amidst a swirl of misconduct allegations, declared his undying loyalty to the former President on social media last Thursday. He stated, Ill never love another President again.
Gaetz's public display of admiration was in response to Trump's unconventional Thanksgiving message, which was directed at the "Radical Left Lunatics." As reported by The Independent, Trump's message read, Happy Thanksgiving to all, including to the Radical Left Lunatics who have worked so hard to destroy our Country, but who have miserably failed, and will always fail, because their ideas and policies are so hopelessly bad that the great people of our Nation just gave a landslide victory to those who want to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! He further assured his followers that the country would soon regain its respect, productivity, fairness, and strength, and that they would be prouder than ever to be Americans.
Gaetz, who resigned from Congress after being nominated by the Trump administration for the attorney general position, announced last week that he would not be pursuing the nomination. His decision came in the wake of a tumultuous nomination process, during which a House committee investigated allegations that Gaetz had paid for sex and had sexual relations with a minor. Gaetz vehemently denied these allegations.
In a social media post explaining his decision, Gaetz wrote, I had excellent meetings with Senators yesterday. I appreciate their thoughtful feedback and the incredible support of so many. While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition. He added, There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle, thus Ill be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General. Trumps DOJ must be in place and ready on Day 1.
Gaetz also stated that he would not be returning to the House, but would continue to support the Trump administration. In his stead, Trump has nominated another staunch loyalist, former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, for the position. Bondi, a seasoned prosecutor and long-time Trump ally, has stood by the president-elect through presidential campaigns and impeachment hearings. Notably, she declined to press charges against Trump University after receiving a donation from a Trump foundation, a decision that has sparked controversy.
