In a surprising revelation, President-elect Donald Trump's repeated bids for the presidency are allegedly rooted in a decade-old grudge.
The 78-year-old recently secured his second presidential victory in three election cycles. Yet, according to sports commentator Stephen A. Smith, Trump's political ambitions were ignited by a failed attempt to purchase an NFL team.
As reported by Fox News, Smith shared a conversation he had with Trump in 2014, during which the latter expressed his intention to buy the Buffalo Bills. "He called me in 2014. This is a true story He says, Stephen A., Im trying to buy the Buffalo Bills. Price tag was $1.4 billion. He had about $1.1 billion. I was being told he wasnt gonna get the team," Smith recounted on Bill Maher's podcast. Trump, apparently frustrated with the NFL owners, made a bold declaration. "He said, Stephen A., if these motherf---ers get in my way - talking about the NFL owners - 'these motherf---ers get in my way, Im gonna get them all back. Im gonna run for president. Thats what he said!"
The Bills were eventually purchased by the Pegula family, leaving Trump's bid unsuccessful. Reflecting on his attempt to buy the Bills during an episode of "Bussin' With The Boys," Trump downplayed the seriousness of his bid. "I dont think it was a very serious run, but I gave them a guarantee of $1 billion, so thats always serious, right?" he stated.
Trump's interest in owning a football team is not new. In the 1980s, he was the majority owner of the New Jersey Generals of the original USFL, following an unsuccessful attempt to buy the Baltimore Colts. He has also shown interest in purchasing the Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots. This narrative adds a fascinating layer to Trump's political journey, suggesting that his presidential ambitions may have been fueled by a desire for retribution rather than a passion for public service.
