A Trump supporter was reportedly assaulted in a New York grocery store due to his "Trump 2024" hat, leading to the arrest of the alleged perpetrator.
The incident occurred on Friday, as confirmed by law enforcement officials.
As reported by The Post Millennial, the accused, Robert Yott, 60, allegedly initiated the confrontation after becoming aggressive towards the Trump supporter because of his political hat. The Village of Bath Police Department provided details of the incident in a press release, stating, On [November 1], around 10:00 a.m., we were dispatched to a fight at the Tops Friendly Markets, located at 309 West Morris Street. It was determined that Robert Yott initiated a confrontation with a stranger inside Tops, after becoming aggressive over the fact that the stranger was wearing a Trump 2024 hat."
The press release further detailed the severity of the assault, noting, Mr. Yott punched the victim in the mouth and head several times, causing the victims teeth to be broken and mouth bloody. Mr. Yott was not known to the victim and this appears to be a random act of violence.
Following the incident, Yott was apprehended and charged with assault and fourth-degree criminal mischief. The police statement added, "Mr. Yott was processed and transported to Steuben County Jail where he is currently awaiting CAP arraignment."
WETM reports that Yott is currently detained at Steuben County Jail without bail. The incident took place in Bath, New York, situated in the Finger Lakes region of the state. This area is recognized as a conservative enclave within New York, a state typically considered a stronghold for liberal politics. This incident underscores the ongoing tension between political factions, even in areas where one viewpoint is more prevalent.
