In a recent rally held in the Las Vegas suburb of Henderson, Nevada, former President Trump was accompanied on stage by the family of a slain marine veteran.
The rally spotlighted the tragic demise of Nicholas Douglas Quets, a 31-year-old Marine veteran and employee of Pima County, Arizona, who was involved in water reclamation projects. Nicholas was brutally murdered on the Caborca-Altar Highway in northern Mexico on October 19, a mere 30 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border.
According to Fox News, the grieving father, retired Army Lt. Col. Warren Douglas Quets, shared his heart-wrenching story with the crowd. "Two weeks ago, I was a completely apolitical actor. Anybody outside my own home wouldn't have known who I would have voted for. Today. The situation changed for me two weeks ago," he said. He revealed that Trump and his running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, met with him just three days after his son's murder.
In a poignant moment, Quets stated, "So when you wonder about where America really is and what the stories are, you don't have to wonder anymore. The man next to me and his vice presidential nominee, a current seated senator, both met with me within 36 hours of asking, and both took up the cause." He attributed his son's death to policy failures, linking them to the influx of fentanyl into the United States and the deaths of other Americans.
Mexican officials reportedly suggested that Nicholas Quets' murder was a "direct attack" after he failed to stop at a cartel checkpoint. His pick-up truck was pursued by armed men who subsequently opened fire. Despite arrests made by Mexican authorities, the bereaved father expressed his reliance on the FBI's investigation and his desire for his son's killers to face justice in the U.S.
Quets outlined his expectations, saying, "What I want is sponsorship of a couple things. One is change to US code so that if people committed crimes against US persons, especially murder, they are brought back here to face our justice. Number two is legislation that is enacted that takes us someplace closer to a plan in Mexico that'll institute not only military capability, but also institution building."
The father also shared a touching moment with the crowd, revealing that Trump had a "tear in his eye" when they discussed his son. He expressed his belief that Trump would "keep" his promise to seek justice if re-elected. Quets also mentioned an unsuccessful attempt by his family to attend a rally with Harris running mate Gov. Tim Walz, stating they were denied entry due to a full venue and were unable to meet with Walz.
Trump, visibly moved by Quets' story, responded to the crowd, "That's incredible and frankly, to do that, to be able to do that literally just a few days after this horrible event happened is pretty amazing." The crowd erupted with chants of "Nicholas!" as Trump pledged to bring the killers to justice, stating, "We're going to get that guy. We're going to get him. We're going to get him. They know who he is. Can you believe it? They know who he is. Nothing's done. Mexico is going to give them to us. Mexico is going to give them to us. They have to. They have to. It's going to be real easy. When I'm president, we're going to put the drug smugglers and human traffickers. We're going to put them right out of business. They're killing hundreds of thousands of people in our country."
