Vice President Kamala Harris found herself in the crosshairs of social media critics following her recent visit to Pennsylvania, a crucial battleground state.
The Vice President was accused of adopting a "new accent" during her address to a predominantly Black congregation at the Church of Christian Compassion in Philadelphia.
According to The New York Post, the conservative social media account "End Wokeness" was among the first to call out Harris, posting a video of her speech with the caption, "BREAKING: Kamala Harris unveils a new accent at a black Philadelphia church." The Vice President's speech was centered on the power of the upcoming elections, emphasizing the significant role that voters play in shaping the future of the nation.
In her address, Harris stated, Here in Pennsylvania, right now each of us has an opportunity to make a difference. Because in this moment we do face a real question. What kind of country do we want to live in? She continued, The great thing about living in a democracy is we the people have the choice to answer that question. So let us answer not just with our words, but with our works.
Drawing from the Book of Psalms, Harris added, Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the mornin. The path may seem hard, the work may seem heavy, but joy cometh in the mornin and church morning is on its way. However, her delivery of these words sparked controversy, with critics likening her accent to that of a pastor, even drawing comparisons to the tenor of Martin Luther King.
This isn't the first time Harris has been accused of altering her accent. Previous instances include her address to the Congressional Black Caucus and a Labor Day rally in Detroit where she spoke to blue-collar union workers. Her Detroit speech even prompted Fox News' Peter Doocy to question White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre about the Vice President's seemingly Southern accent.
Jean-Pierre dismissed Doocy's query, stating, I have no idea what youre talking about, and later adding, I mean, do you hear the question that youre I mean, do you think Americans seriously think that this is an important question? You know what they care about? They care about the economy, they care about lowering costs, they care about health care. Thats what they want to hear democracy and freedom Im not going to even entertain some question about its just. Hearing it sounds so ridiculous. The question Im talking about the question is just insane.
Despite the controversy, the Harris campaign remained silent on the matter, offering no immediate response to the criticism. Meanwhile, Pennsylvania continues to be a focal point in the current election cycle, having been won by Trump in 2016 and Biden in 2020. Both Harris and Trump have been actively campaigning in the state, understanding its potential to sway the overall election outcome. Harris was scheduled to hold a campaign rally in Philadelphia, while Trump was set to join a rally in New York City's Madison Square Garden.
