In a recent turn of events, a beleaguered Brooklyn Democrat found herself in the midst of a public relations crisis, following allegations of assaulting a police officer during a protest against a shelter in Bensonhurst in July.
Councilwoman Susan Zhuang, in an attempt to salvage her reputation, reportedly spent $25,000 of her campaign funds on a renowned public relations firm, Actum. The global consulting firm has been instrumental in managing the aftermath of the incident, which has been referred to as the "toothy episode."
According to The New York Post, the payment to Actum was made on August 2. However, the decision has been met with criticism from fellow Democrats. One Democratic politician, expressing disapproval, stated, "Susan is going to need more than a high-priced PR firm to get out of this one. She should have donated $25,000 to the Police Foundation instead." The politician further added, "So what if shes a politician? It doesnt mean she can viciously attack a cop and get away with it.
Jerry Goldfeder, Zhuang's campaign attorney, confirmed Actum's role in managing the campaign's "public relations," but refrained from detailing the nature of their work. Zhuang, who was captured on camera during the incident, has been charged with assault and resisting arrest. Despite the charges, Zhuang has pleaded not guilty and has even established a controversial defense fund to offset her legal expenses.
This week, Zhuang's supporters gathered outside Brooklyn Supreme Court, waving signs and cheering for the lawmaker as she exited a hearing related to the criminal case. However, the defense fund set up by the councilwoman has yet to receive any donations, as revealed in the lawmakers disclosure released this week. The incident and its aftermath continue to stir controversy, raising questions about the use of campaign funds and the conduct of public officials.
