The Democratic Socialists of America's New York City chapter is contemplating a resolution to censure US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, accusing her of being overly lenient on Israel.
The congresswoman's alleged transgressions include her endorsement of Israel's "right to exist," according to The New York Post.
The resolution, which will be considered at the group's annual convention, criticizes Ocasio-Cortez for several statements and votes. These include her support for House Resolution 888, which "affirmed Israel's right to exist" and "recognizes that denying Israel's right to exist is a form of antisemitism." The resolution states, "These actions violate DSAs democratically decided program of Anti-Zionism and Palestinian liberation."
The congresswoman's support for Resolution 996, which solely condemned Hamas and not the Israel Defense Forces for sexual violence, and anti-human shield Resolution 5917, which permitted the president to sanction members of the "Palestine Islamic Jihad," are among the other contentious issues.
The resolution's fate at the convention remains uncertain. However, Ocasio-Cortez's relationship with the DSA has been strained. The national DSA revoked its conditional endorsement of the incumbent in July, less than three weeks after announcing it. The decision was influenced by a panel she held on combating antisemitism, among other factors. Despite this, the DSA's NYC chapter continues to endorse her.
Ocasio-Cortez has consistently criticized Israel's retaliatory response to conflicts with its neighboring adversaries. She accused Israel of "unequivocally" violating international law following a pager attack targeting Iran-backed Hezbollah terrorists in Lebanon. In March, she accused Israel of committing "genocide" against the Palestinian people during the Gaza war, which was initiated following Hamas' sneak attack inside the Jewish state on October 7, 2023.
The congresswoman did not respond to The Post's request for comment. The city DSA's convention will also consider several other unusual resolutions. One such proposal would require candidates seeking the DSA endorsement to support legislation promoting Palestinian liberation and opposing Israel. Candidates would be asked to endorse the "boycott, divestment and sanctions" movement against Israel and pledge not to associate with even liberal and moderate American pro-Israel groups such as J Street and the Democratic Majority for Israel.
