In an unexpected turn of events, former President Bill Clinton delivered a eulogy at the funeral of the late Ethel Kennedy, widow of Democrat Robert F.
Kennedy, where he candidly discussed their relationship.
The former president's remarks, which included the statement, I thought your mother was the cats meow. She would flirt with me in the most innocent ways, were met with a mixture of awkward laughter and puzzled expressions from the mourners.
According to One America News, Clinton's comments were particularly striking given his history of infidelity, most notably his affair with Monica Lewinsky, a former White House intern. His reputation as a womanizer was further cemented in the 1990s when he falsely claimed, I did not have sexual relations with that woman, in a now-infamous speech to the American public. Clinton's controversial associations also include his admitted friendship with the late Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender, with whom he traveled on the notorious private plane known as The Lolita Express.
The funeral service for Ethel Kennedy took place at the Cathedral of St. Matthews the Apostle in Washington, D.C., drawing a crowd of Kennedy family members, politicians, and family friends. Clinton, who was impeached in 1988 following his affair with Lewinsky, reminisced about the Valentine's Day cards he had received from Ethel. I loved all these Valentines cards and theres a bunch of them downstairs, and theyre very political, he shared, before reading one of the cards aloud: Roses are red, violets are blue, Im surrounded by love, but theres still room for you.
Clinton's eulogy also included a light-hearted comment about Ethel's large family. I remember once I said you know were not at replacement population anymore and all the politics are anti-immigrant, what are we gonna do? he quipped, We need more people like you.
Kerry Kennedy, one of Ethel's daughters, referenced Clinton's speech during her own eulogy. President Clinton said that mummy flirted with him and you know she loved each of you, she said, addressing Clinton, former President Barack Obama, and President Joe Biden, who were seated in the front row. She also shared a humorous anecdote about her mother, saying, A few weeks ago I called her from Italy and I said, Mummy, Im in Italy. Is there anything I can bring you? and she said, An Italian would be nice.
Ethel Kennedy, who passed away at the age of 96 following a stroke, leaves behind a large family, including 11 children, 34 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren. President Joe Biden, the last speaker at the funeral, revealed that he too had been a recipient of Ethel's Valentine's cards. He described one that featured a picture of me and Ethel surrounded by hearts, and a poem that read, Im not Biden my time waiting for you valentine because hes no ordinary Joe. Biden concluded, I dont know how many you got that damned Valentine, but I tell you what, it meant a lot to me.
