The city that never sleeps is in a state of unrest as a significant number of its residents are calling for the resignation of Mayor Eric Adams.
A recent poll by the Marist Institute for Public Opinion reveals that nearly 70% of New York City adults believe that Adams should relinquish his position. This sentiment is echoed by 71% of Democrats and a majority of the city's black population.
As reported by The Post Millennial, the public outcry follows Adams' recent indictment on five criminal charges, including bribery and fraud. The Mayor stands accused of accepting unlawful campaign contributions from the Turkish government. Despite the serious allegations, Adams has remained defiant, refusing to step down. This resistance comes even as several members of his administration have already resigned. New York Governor Kathy Hochul, the only person with the authority to dismiss Adams, has expressed approval of these resignations, viewing them as a step in the right direction.
The Marist poll also sheds light on the general dissatisfaction with Adams' performance as Mayor. A mere 26% of those surveyed approve of his leadership, a significant decline from the 37% approval rating he enjoyed in November 2023. Conversely, 47% of respondents strongly disapprove of his leadership, with a paltry 11% expressing strong approval.
The poll further indicates that if Adams does not voluntarily step down, 63% of New Yorkers believe that Governor Hochul should initiate the process to remove him from office. Hochul, who has been closely monitoring the investigation, stated post-indictment that she expects Adams to "find an appropriate path forward to ensure the people of New York City are being well served by their leaders." With her own approval ratings dwindling, Hochul may face mounting pressure to act if public support for Adams' removal continues to grow.
Hochul emphasized the importance of stable and responsible leadership, stating, "We must give New Yorkers confidence that there is steady, responsible leadership at every level of government."
Amid these developments, several prominent Democrats in New York are reportedly preparing for potential mayoral runs to challenge the beleaguered Adams. Among the potential contenders is former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who resigned following sexual harassment allegations but is rumored to be considering a political comeback.
