A forthcoming television series is set to challenge the typical Hollywood narrative by positioning Christians as the protagonists.
The series, which is being developed by Mel Gibson, will focus on the Siege of Malta, a historical event that saw a small group of knights successfully defend the island against a massive Ottoman invasion.
"Im also working on a TV limited series about the Siege of Malta, which is an incredible story, and theres only one place to film that, I mean, in Malta," Gibson revealed, as reported by Movieweb. He further elaborated on the plot, saying, "Because thats where it happened, at these fortresses where 700 knights defended Malta against an onslaught from the Turkish and Suleiman sent 40,000 men and ships and, wow, the knights won. So, its a pretty crazy, great story."
The Siege of Malta, which took place from May to September in 1565, was a pivotal moment in history. The Ottoman Empire, a formidable force at the time, sought to seize the Mediterranean island as part of its conquests. The Christian world, already reeling from a series of defeats, found hope in the victory at Malta. According to Encyclopedia Britannica, "Controlled by the Knights Hospitaller since their expulsion from Rhodes, Malta was the key to Christian defenses against Ottoman expansion in the Mediterranean." The source also reports that the battle saw 3,000 of the 6,000 Christian defenders perish, while the Ottomans lost 20,000 of their 40,000 invaders.
The defeat at Malta marked a significant setback for the Ottomans, giving Christian Europe hope that Turkish expansion could be halted. However, it wasn't until the Siege of Vienna in 1683 that the Ottoman's European advance was permanently stopped.
In addition to the Malta series, Gibson is also working on other projects, including the sequel to "The Passion of the Christ." According to the Daily Wire, filming for the sequel is set to begin this spring. The Christian Broadcasting Network reports that Gibson has developed six draft screenplays for "The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection," which has been in development for a decade. The film will depict Jesus crucifixion and the three days leading up to His resurrection, as per film journalist Jordan Ruimy.
Gibson confirmed the sequel's development during a 2016 conversation with evangelist Greg Laurie. "Its called The Resurrection. Of course, thats a very big subject and it needs to be looked at because we dont want to just do a simple rendering of it you know, read what happened," he said. This shift in Hollywood's narrative, focusing on Christian heroes, is a refreshing change and a testament to the enduring power of faith and resilience.
