In the midst of the current presidential race, renowned author Stephen King has taken to social media to express his concerns about the age of former President Donald Trump.
In a recent post, King described Trump as being "past his sell-by date," a comment that has sparked a wave of reactions across the political spectrum.
According to Newsweek, Trump, the Republican nominee, is slated to compete against Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming November elections. Harris stepped into the role of Democratic nominee following President Joe Biden's unexpected withdrawal from the race in July.
King, known for his outspoken criticism of Trump, has repeatedly voiced his apprehensions about the former president on social media. He has previously characterized Trump as "dangerous" and a "horrible" person and president. In his recent post, King urged voters to consider Trump's age before casting their votes, stating, "Trump is past his sell-by date. Don't vote for an old man who won't release his medical records."
Trump's refusal to disclose his medical records during previous campaigns has been a contentious issue. In 2015, Dr. Harold Bornstein, Trump's personal physician, penned a letter claiming that Trump would be the "healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency." However, in a 2018 interview with CNN, Bornstein revealed that the letter had been dictated by Trump himself.
In 2019, then-White House physician Dr. Ronny Jackson held a press conference about an exam that declared Trump obese, but also praised his genes and cognitive health. "It's just the way God made him," Jackson said.
Last November, Trump released a doctor's letter on his social media platform Truth Social, stating that his physical and cognitive health were normal and exceptional, respectively. However, the legitimacy of this report has been questioned due to the lack of specific test results or metrics on key health indicators such as blood pressure, cholesterol levels, or weight.
In response to King's post, Trump's communications director Steven Cheung dismissed the author's comments, stating, "Nobody cares about what this moron Stephen King has to say. He hasn't been relevant in 30 years and is desperate for attention because he's past his sell-by date."
The topic of Trump's age has become increasingly prominent following Biden's withdrawal and his endorsement of 59-year-old Harris. Harris has since experienced a surge in support, particularly among younger voters.
Despite being only three years younger than Biden, Trump, at 78, had not previously faced the same level of public concern about his age or cognitive ability. However, with Biden's departure, these concerns have become more pronounced.
A recent /YouGov survey of 1,604 U.S. adults conducted on August 2 found that nearly a third of independent voters believe that Trump's age will "severely limit" his ability to be president. The poll found that 34 percent think Trump's age will be a major issue if he returns to the White House in January 2025.
In contrast, only 7 percent of U.S. adults believe Harris' age will affect her ability to be president, with 80 percent saying it will have little or no effect, according to the /YouGov survey.
King, who joined the Democratic Party in 1970, continues to use his platform to criticize the former president. In a recent post, King wrote, "There's no convincing Trump voters. I know that, but the man lies like a rug, don't he?" This statement, like his previous comments, reflects the author's ongoing concern about Trump's potential return to the Oval Office.
