Andrew Cuomo, the former governor of New York who fell from grace amid sexual harassment allegations, is rumored to be plotting a return to the political arena.
Speculations are rife that he is gearing up to contest for the position of New York City's mayor.
As reported by The Post Millennial, Cuomo was allegedly laying the groundwork for his mayoral campaign even before the indictment of the current Mayor, Eric Adams, came to light. Despite facing a tough Democratic primary in 2025 and mounting pressure to resign, Adams has consistently asserted his intention to remain in office.
Cuomo's political career took a nosedive in 2021 when he was forced to resign following an independent investigation that found him guilty of sexually harassing several women. Despite the damning evidence, Cuomo has consistently denied the allegations and expressed regret over his decision to step down. His handling of the coronavirus crisis also came under fire during a recent Congressional hearing.
Chris Coffey, a former adviser to ex-NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg, was quoted by Politico as saying, "I think hes [Cuomo] going to run." Coffey further speculated that Cuomo was likely to run regardless of the circumstances, and a weakened or absent Eric Adams would only improve his chances.
Despite his tarnished reputation, Cuomo still has a substantial war chest of campaign funds at his disposal. In 2022, a sex crime charge against him was dismissed due to lack of evidence, although the Albany County District Attorney described the complainant as "credible."
Cuomo has also taken legal action against Attorney General Letitia James, accusing her of deliberately botching the investigation. He has sued James and her office for witness statements related to the probe. The Justice Department found that Cuomo and his executive staff had fostered a sexually hostile work environment and violated federal retaliation rules. However, the claims were settled in an agreement with the New York State Executive Chamber.
Despite the swirling rumors, a spokesperson for Cuomo told Axios that the former governor has "no plans to make plans" for a potential mayoral run. Yet, he has reportedly spent thousands on polling earlier this year to explore the feasibility of a run for the office. This move, coupled with his past actions, suggests that Cuomo's political ambitions are far from extinguished.
