The creator of a popular comedy show, Lorne Michaels, has announced his plans to "reinvent" the portrayal of former President Donald Trump in the upcoming 50th season.
He believes that the show's cast is well-equipped to take on the roles of various political candidates, and he's particularly interested in how Trump's character has evolved over time.
According to Mediaite, James Austin Johnson will reprise his role as Trump, a character previously played by Alec Baldwin, a well-known Democrat actor. Baldwin's portrayal of Trump was often critical, especially during Trump's presidency. Michaels emphasized the need for constant reinvention in show business, stating, One of the great parts of show business is that you cant come back with the same show. So, all of these characters have to be reexamined, and if it makes sense and feels relevant, you know youre on the right track.
Michaels described Johnson's portrayal of Trump as a "diminished Trump." He explained, James, who I think is brilliant, played Trump as the sort of diminished Trump. The guy at the back of the hardware store holding court, and that played because it felt relevant. But we are going to have to reinvent it again because, well, you saw the debate.
In the same interview, Michaels reaffirmed a previous statement he made about Democrats being more sensitive to satirical commentary than Republicans. He clarified that the show's humor is not intended as a personal attack, but rather a commentary on public actions and statements. He said, Yes. And its not personal in the sense of an attack, its just, you did say that and you did do that, so were you thinking it would be rude for us to comment on it? Thats what we do, and were going to do it again.
This commitment to satirical commentary, regardless of political affiliation, is a cornerstone of the show's approach.
