In a heartrending incident at Apalachee High School in Georgia, a special education math teacher, David Phenix, was gravely wounded during a mass shooting.
However, amidst the chaos and terror, Phenix found solace in the bravery of two 14-year-old students who stepped up to help him. The teacher, who was shot twice while shielding his students from the gunfire, expressed his deep gratitude towards the teenagers who assisted him after he was hit in the hip and foot.
According to The New York Post, Phenix took to Facebook to share his appreciation for those who risked their own safety to help him. He wrote, "I would like to thank those who, in the course of all the chaos, found it in themselves to take my life in their hands." He specifically mentioned his co-teacher, Valerie Lancaster, who managed to apply pressure to his wound while simultaneously calming a terrified class of 23 students. He also praised the two young students who stepped in to help when Lancaster called for assistance, stating, "You both are exceptional young people and have my everlasting gratitude."
Phenix, who has been teaching for 23 years, including a year at Apalachee High School, acknowledged that the horrific images and sounds from that day will forever be imprinted in his memory. He also expressed his sorrow for the families of the four individuals who lost their lives in the shooting, stating that their grief remains at the forefront of his thoughts. The victims included Ricky Aspinwall, 39, Cristina Irimie, 53, and students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, both 14.
Despite the trauma, Phenix found a silver lining in the fact that his injuries narrowly missed vital organs and structures. He noted, "Had things been a quarter inch to the left or right, things could have been vastly different."
The alleged shooter, 14-year-old Colt Gray, was arrested and charged as an adult with four counts of felony murder. In a disturbing twist, it was revealed that the firearm used in the shooting was given to Gray by his father, Colin Gray, who purportedly believed it would "toughen him up." The elder Gray, 54, was also arrested and faces charges related to the shooting, including four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second-degree murder, and eight counts of cruelty to children in the second degree.
This tragic incident underscores the need for a robust conversation about gun control and school safety, particularly in light of the alleged shooter's father's misguided belief in the supposed benefits of firearm possession for his underage son. It also highlights the courage and resilience of individuals like David Phenix and the two brave students who, in the face of unimaginable terror, demonstrated the strength of the human spirit.
