In a recent development, Anthony Saccavino and Brian Cordasco, two former fire chiefs from the New York City Fire Department, were apprehended on Monday.
The arrests were part of a federal corruption investigation, as reported by the New York Times. The charges against the former fire chiefs include bribery, corruption, and making false statements, as stated by the New York Post.
According to The Post Millennial, these arrests are the latest in a series of federal probes into the New York City government. Just last week, Edward Caban, the NYC Police Commissioner, stepped down after an FBI raid on his residence. In addition, several other officials linked to NYC Mayor Eric Adams had their homes searched. The Times was informed by sources familiar with the situation that the two ex-fire chiefs are alleged to have accepted bribes exceeding $100,000 to fast-track safety inspections. Following the federal searches of Cordasco's and Saccavino's homes in February, they were assigned modified duties, as per the New York Daily News.
Cordasco and Saccavino were in charge of supervising safety inspections for various building projects. Despite the numerous other investigations currently surrounding Adams, the Times has reported that there is no evidence to suggest that these bribery charges are connected to the other federal probes involving the mayor.
The allegations against the former FDNY officials could potentially intensify the scrutiny on Adams, adding to the perception of corruption amidst the ongoing investigations.
