Mika Brzezinski, co-host of "Morning Joe," expressed her astonishment on Friday over the inclination of undecided voters towards supporting former President Donald Trump.
This shift in voter sentiment was observed following a recent debate between Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, an event that was moderated by ABC News hosts David Muir and Linsey Davis. The ABC News anchors have since faced criticism for their alleged frequent interruptions of Trump and their failure to conduct "fact checks" on Harris's statements during the debate.
According to WND, Brzezinski sought insight from New York Times reporter Jeremy Peters regarding the lack of support for Harris. Peters had recently penned an article titled 'Pundits said Harris won the debate, undecided voters werent so sure,' in which he quoted several undecided voters. "They acknowledged that Ms. Harris seemed more presidential than Mr. Trump, and they said she laid out a sweeping vision to fix some of the countrys most stubborn problems, but they also said she did not seem much different from Mr. Biden and they wanted change," Brzezinski quoted from Peters' piece.
Brzezinski further quoted from Peters' article, "Voters said they were glad she has a tax and economic plan, but they want to know how it will become law when Washington is so polarized. They know she wants to give assistance to first-time home buyers, but doubted that it was realistic." Brzezinski then posed a question to Peters, "But are those undecided voters saying, Im going to kind of lean Trump here because I want change? I dont get it.
While corporate media pundits praised Harris's debate performance, the reviews from undecided voters were more mixed. A Reuters panel revealed that six out of ten panelists were more inclined to back Trump following the debate. Peters explained to Brzezinski, "People dont really know her. Shes famous as vice president, of course, she has a very high name recognition, but shes largely unknown as a candidate and politician.
Peters suggested that the debate format was not the ideal platform for Harris to introduce herself to voters, given the limited time she had to answer questions. He proposed that Harris should participate in more interviews to better acquaint herself with the public.
Harris has been notably absent from the media, with her only interview being an Aug. 29 segment with CNN host Dana Bash, where she was accompanied by Democratic Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota. This absence has been maintained since President Joe Biden announced he would not be seeking reelection.
The Biden-Harris administration, which took office in January 2021, has seen a significant increase in prices. Data from the St. Louis Federal Reserve indicates a 20.3% increase, while the Consumer Price Index (CPI) hit a recent high of 9% in June 2022. The CPI was at 2.5% year-to-year in August, falling short of economists' expectations.
When Trump left office in January 2021, the CPI had grown 1.4% year-over-year, and the average price for a gallon of gas was under $2.25, according to GasBuddy.com. In contrast, the current average price for a gallon of gas stands at $3.23, as reported by AAA. This stark contrast in economic conditions may be a contributing factor to the shift in voter sentiment towards Trump.
