In a recent interview, Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman expressed his belief that President Joe Biden could have triumphed over former President Donald Trump in this year's election, despite acknowledging Trump's prowess as a debater.
"It's going to be a straight-up debate," Fetterman stated on CNN's "State of the Union," in anticipation of the upcoming debate between Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, who has stepped in as the Democratic candidate following Biden's withdrawal.
"She's going to do great, of course, but Donald Trump will be good too. I mean, we can all remember he wrecked all of the Republicans. Hes a good debater," Fetterman said, according to The New York Post. He also noted that Hillary Clinton had "actually wrecked Trump objectively on the three debates" back in 2016, yet Trump still emerged victorious in that election cycle.
Fetterman, a Democrat, suggested that the forthcoming debate between Trump and Harris, scheduled to be hosted by ABC News in Philadelphia, may not be the deciding factor in the election. "At the end of the day, I dont believe this debates going to be definitive because its going to come down to this choice, and its going to be close," he predicted.
The senator, who has been a staunch defender of Biden, even during the latter's faltering debate performance against Trump in June, maintained that Biden could have won re-election. "I do believe fundamentally that Joe Biden would have beaten Trump, and it was going to be very close, and I have always predicted that as well too, and now Harris," he said.
Fetterman expressed optimism about Harris's chances, praising her campaign's fundraising efforts and her performance over the past six weeks. However, he also acknowledged the tight race, stating, "And it comes down to that very same, very stark choice."
Despite Harris's slight lead over Trump in national polling, Fetterman cautioned against overconfidence, citing past instances where polls underestimated Trump's support. "Everybody thought that Hillary Clinton was going to pull it away, and she wrecked him. She actually wrecked Trump objectively on the three debates," he recalled. "People thought that Joe Biden was going to win by three or five points."
Fetterman, who campaigned with Harris last week, expressed confidence in her ability to secure a victory in Pennsylvania, a key swing state with the highest number of Electoral College votes. He noted that Trump's campaign has heavily targeted Pennsylvania with advertisements, indicating the state's significance to the Republican's strategy.
The senator emphasized the importance of voters considering the type of leadership they want for the next four years. He suggested that a Trump victory could lead to "reckless and bizarre behavior," while a Harris administration would offer stability.
The upcoming debate and subsequent election results will undoubtedly have a profound impact on the nation's future. As Fetterman stated, the choice voters make will determine the course of the next four years. With the stakes so high, the importance of each vote cannot be overstated.
