In a shocking turn of events, a reckless driver caused havoc in Santa Fe, New Mexico, leading to a police-involved shooting and the subsequent cancellation of the much-anticipated Desfile de la Gente parade.
The incident unfolded near the bustling Santa Fe Plaza on Sunday morning, just hours before the parade was set to commence.
According to ABC News, the identity of the suspect, who was arrested following the incident, was not immediately disclosed. Santa Fe Mayor Alan Webber described the harrowing scene, stating, We had one individual crashing into cars recklessly, confronting the police, leading the police on a chase. He further added, There were shots fired from the police. He was apprehended and hes in custody. Unfortunately, he successfully ruined the day for everybody else.
The New Mexico State Police confirmed that the shooting involved officers from both the Santa Fe Police and the Santa Fe County Sheriffs Office. While the officers escaped unscathed, the suspect sustained injuries. Eyewitness Dan Shipp, who was near the plaza at the time, recounted seeing a white pickup truck making several hard turns before crashing through a barricade. He also reported hearing six or seven shots but was unsure whether the police or the suspect had fired them.
Shipp also noted that hundreds of people were setting up tents along the parade route to sell various items, from trinkets to rugs. However, the chaos caused by the reckless driver led to the shutdown of all activities. Everything is shut down now, Shipp lamented, indicating that all other scheduled events at the plaza were also cancelled.
The Desfile de la Gente parade, also known as the Santa Fe Fiesta Historical/Hysterical Parade, is a cherished event aimed at providing "fun, relaxation and cultural enjoyment for the citizens and visitors of Santa Fe." However, the actions of one individual cast a shadow over the festivities, highlighting the need for stringent measures to ensure public safety.
