Brian Stelter, a renowned media personality, is set to make a triumphant return to CNN and his Reliable Sources newsletter.
Subscribers of the newsletter were informed via email that Stelter would be resuming his role as the publication's head on September 9, a day before the potentially sole presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and President Donald Trump.
Stelter, however, was quick to dispel any notions of a nostalgic return. "But this is not going to be a Back to the Future remake," he clarified. "The media industry has matured, CNN has evolved, and I have changed a lot since I signed off two years ago. I loved my old life as the anchor of a Sunday morning show but, to borrow some lingo from my video game blogger days, I finished that level of the game. Time for new levels, new challenges," he stated, as reported by The Post Millennial.
In addition to his newsletter duties, Stelter will also serve as a chief media analyst for CNN. According to Variety, he explained that this role "means Ill be appearing on air, developing digital content, and helming this newsletter. It will be different, because I am different."
Stelter also reflected on his departure from CNN, saying, "I always scoffed at people who said getting fired was the best thing thats ever happened to me until, well, it happened to me."
Stelter, who founded Reliable Sources in 2015, left the network after the television program was cancelled in 2022. His successor, Oliver Darcy, also departed in August to launch his own newsletter, Status. Stelter's exit occurred under the leadership of Chris Licht, who replaced Jeff Zucker, only to be replaced himself by Mark Thompson, a former executive at The New York Times and the BBC.
