New York Governor Kathy Hochul has firmly rejected former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's assertion that Hochul's lackluster performance in the 2022 gubernatorial race led to the Democratic Party's loss of the House majority.
Hochul, in a recent interview with MSNBC's "Morning Joe," countered Pelosi's claim, stating, Ill tell you this, no governor in the history of the state of New York has worked harder to elect members of Congress than I have. We are going to win this on the ground because I know how to do this. I now have the chance to focus on this.
According to POLITICO, Pelosi attributed the Democrats' failure to retain their House majority in the 2022 elections to Hochul's unexpectedly narrow victory in the New York gubernatorial race. Critics have suggested that Hochul's weak performance may have negatively impacted other Democratic candidates, leading to the Republicans flipping four Democratic-held seats in New York during the midterms.
When confronted with Pelosi's assertion, Governor Hochul responded unequivocally, I dont agree with that. She pointed to her efforts to raise funds for the New York Democratic Party and distribute them to local counties, along with her ongoing collaboration with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, and hundreds of staff across 35 offices.
Pelosi, who had not discussed this year's races with Hochul, emphasized the significance of the "three M's: mobilization, message, money" in her conversation with Jeffries. Meanwhile, Hochul, no longer a candidate herself, acknowledged her ability to "laser focus" on key swing districts, including Hudson Valley, Syracuse, Central New York, and Long Island. She confidently declared, Were going to win these races and win strong. This determination underscores the ongoing struggle within the Democratic Party and the challenges they face in regaining their lost ground.
