Two Jordanian nationals, Hasan Y. Hamdan, 32, and Mohammad K. Dabous, 28, have been identified as the individuals who attempted to infiltrate the Quantico Marine Corps Base in Virginia.
The duo, who are in the United States illegally, were released on bail after their arrest.
According to The Post Millennial, the pair were freed from the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in June, despite their questionable immigration status. Hamdan and Dabous managed to secure their release by posting bonds of $15,000 and $10,000 respectively, as per law enforcement sources. The two were apprehended on May 3 for trespassing on the military base and were subsequently taken into ICE custody, as reported by the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS).
The CIS also revealed that government attorneys had contended that the disclosure of their identities constituted a "clearly unwarranted invasion of personal privacy" and was of "minimal public interest" when the CIS sought their identities through FOIA requests. Court documents further elaborated on their offenses, stating that the two did unlawfully go upon a military installation for a purpose prohibited by law, to wit: knowingly and intentionally entering Marine Corps Base Quantico.
The incident unfolded when Hamdan and Dabous, driving a box truck, approached the Fuller Road Gate and attempted to force their way through. Their efforts were thwarted by vigilant military personnel. However, the base's military members were kept in the dark about the incident for two weeks.
Hamdan had unlawfully entered the U.S. in April via the southern border near San Diego and was released due to a lack of detention space, as per the New York Post. Dabous, on the other hand, had overstayed his student visa. After being cited for trespassing, they were summoned to court on July 22. Magistrate Judge William B. Porter authorized their release on the condition that they appear before the court at a later date and refrain from visiting government property, including Quantico. Their court appearance is slated for September 17.
While initial reports hinted at a potential terrorist motive, the actual reasons behind the attempted intrusion remain shrouded in mystery. This incident underscores the need for stringent immigration policies and robust border security to safeguard national security and uphold the rule of law.
