In a significant political development, six Democrats crossed party lines to join the House GOP in a resolution condemning Vice President Kamala Harris's border policies.
The resolution, which passed with a vote of 220-196, was a clear indication of bipartisan dissatisfaction with the current administration's handling of border security.
According to The Post Millennial, the six Democrats who supported HR 1371 were Representatives Mary Peltola, Jared Golden, Marie Perez, Yadira Caraveo, Don Davis, and Henry Cuellar. Notably, Representative Golden and several others among the group represent swing districts in their respective states, highlighting the potential political implications of their decision.
The resolution was introduced by House GOP Chair, Representative Elise Stefanik. In a scathing critique of the Vice President's role in border management, Stefanik stated, Today my resolution condemning Kamala Harris for her role as Joe Bidens open border czar passed the House. Let me be clear: Harris and every elected Democrat owns this historic border crisis that has turned every community into a border community. It is time that we return to President Donald Trumps border security policies that put the safety of American citizens first.
Stefanik further lambasted the Vice President for the "disastrous consequences" of her "failed Far Left open border agenda," which she claimed had led to a "historic surge in illegal crossings" and created both a national security and humanitarian crisis. She used her time on the House floor to criticize Harris as the "open border czar" and accuse her of failing to secure the country's borders.
The Vice President was appointed by President Joe Biden in 2021 to address the root causes of illegal immigration, a role that led to her being dubbed the administrations border czar. Biden, in his announcement of Harris's appointment, stated, "Ive asked her, the VP, today because shes the most qualified person to do it to lead our efforts with Mexico and the Northern Triangle and the countries that help are going to need help in stemming the movement of so many folks, stemming the migration to our southern border."
However, mainstream media outlets have since disputed the label of "border czar" for Harris, with some even retracting their previous reports. Axios, for instance, added an editors note to a recent article, acknowledging that they had "incorrectly labeled Harris a border czar in 2021.
House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, however, dismissed these retractions, telling Fox News, "The mainstream media can try to rewrite history all they want, but the American people know the truth and our House Republican majority will remind them. Kamala Harris is Biden's border czar, and the unprecedented invasion at our borders is hers to own." This incident underscores the ongoing controversy surrounding the Biden administration's border policies and the role of Vice President Harris in managing this critical issue.
